Meine künstlerische Praxis ist in der Fotografie verwurzelt und erweitert sie um zeitbasierte Medien, Video, Performance, Klang, Sound Art und Installation. Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Körper und Raum; ich untersuche, wie die mediale Durchdringung unseres Alltags unser Denken und Rollenverständnis beeinflusst.
Im Mittelpunkt steht die Sichtbarmachung von Erfahrungswelten. Ich dekodiere kulturelle Codes und beleuchte die Zwischenräume zwischen Autonomie und Identität, zwischen Handlungsspielräumen und Macht sowie unserer Beziehung zur Natur. Besonders beschäftigt mich die Wiederaneignung des eigenen (Ab‑)Bildes – als Frau, Künstlerin und Mensch im Hier und Jetzt.
Die Sprache der jeweiligen Materialien und Medien bildet dabei einen wesentlichen Teil des kreativen Prozesses. Mein Ziel ist die Schaffung nachhaltiger Resonanzräume, in denen Kunst, Alltag und gesellschaftlicher Kontext in einen nachhaltigen Dialog treten.

My artistic practice is rooted in photography and expands into time‑based media, video, performance, sound, sound art, and installation. It begins with the question of how body and space relate, and I investigate how the pervasive presence of media in our daily lives shapes our thinking and our sense of role.
Central to my work is the rendering of lived experience. I decode cultural codes and illuminate the interstices between autonomy and identity, between spheres of agency and power, and between humanity and nature. A particular preoccupation is the re‑appropriation of one’s own (self‑)image—as a woman, as an artist, and as a person living in the here and now.
The language of each material and medium constitutes an essential component of the creative process. My aim is to create enduring resonant spaces where art, everyday life, and societal context engage in a sustainable dialogue.

Freya Hattenberger (*1978) lebt und arbeitet in Köln. Sie studierte Medienkunst mit den Schwerpunkten künstlerische Fotografie und Videoperformance bei Jürgen Klauke und Marcel Odenbach an der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (2001 2006) und schloss ihr Studium mit Auszeichnung ab. Anschließend absolvierte sie von 2007 2009 einen postgradualen Master of Fine Arts am Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. Ihre künstlerische Praxis profitiert zudem von einem Erststudium der Kulturanthropologie mit Schwerpunkt ethnografischer Film an der Goethe Universität Frankfurt, das ihr ein tiefes Verständnis für kulturübergreifende Narrative sowie für die Beziehungen zwischen Körper, Macht und Raum vermittelt hat.
Während ihrer Laufbahn wurde sie mit zahlreichen Stipendien und Preisen ausgezeichnet, darunter das Karl Schmidt Rottluff Stipendium sowie der Förderpreis des Landes Nordrhein Westfalen. Ihre Arbeiten wurden national und international gezeigt, u.a. Museum am Ostwall Dortmund, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Galerie Rudolfinum (Praha), Transmediale Berlin, KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin, Ausstellungshalle für Zeitgenössische Kunst (Münster), Kunsthalle Bremen, MARTa (Herford), Märkisches Museum Witten, Clemens Sels Museum Neuss, Videotage (Hongkong), NCCA – Center for Contemporary Art (Moskau) und Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen.
Werke von Hattenberger befinden sich in den Sammlungen des Musée de Beaux Arts Nantes, des Centre régional de la photographie Hauts de France (CRP) und des Museums Ostwall Dortmund sowie des Märkischen Museums Witten. Ihre Videoarbeiten werden von V Tape (Toronto) vertrieben und gehören zur Sammlung der Stiftung imai – inter media art institute Düsseldorf.
Sie hat Künstlerresidenzen in Frankreich (Paris, Dijon, Valenciennes), Boston (USA), im Kaukasus und Bangalore (Indien) absolviert.

Freya Hattenberger (*1978) lives and works in Cologne. She studied Media Art—with a focus on artistic photography and video performance—with Jürgen Klauke and Marcel Odenbach at Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (2001–2006), graduating with distinction. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally, notably at Museum am Ostwall Dortmund, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Galerie Rudolfinum (Praha), Transmediale Berlin, KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin, Ausstellungshalle für Zeitgenössische Kunst (Münster), Kunsthalle Bremen, MARTa (Herford), Märkisches Museum Witten, Clemens Sels Museum Neuss, Videotage (Hongkong), NCCA – Center for Contemporary Art (Moskau) and Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen.
Works by Hattenberger belong to the collections of the Musée des Beaux Arts Nantes, the Centre Régional de la Photographie Hauts de France (CRP), Museum Ostwall Dortmund, and the Märkisches Museum Witten. Her video pieces are distributed by V Tape (Toronto) and are part of the collection of the imai – inter media art institute Düsseldorf.
